Luca Maria Gambardella

Gambardella
He obtained a degree and PhD in Computer Science, developing a strong interest in artificial intelligence and the Lisp language. In Lugano (CH) he is Full Professor of the USI Faculty of Computer Science at IDSIA (the Dalle Molle Institute for artificial intelligence studies USI-SUPSI), an institute of 90 people which he directed for 25 years until 2020. He directs the Master of Artificial Intelligence at USI and in his scientific studies the ability of machines to learn and is a pioneer of algorithms that are inspired by the behavior of ants applied to logistics and swarm robotics. He recently won the FNS Agora award and is CTO of Artificialy sa in Lugano.
In the artistic field he co-created inside the Lugano-Besso pedestrian tunnel in 2019 “NeuralRope#1. Inside an Artificial Brain.” an interactive urban art installation that represents a neuronal network, in 2020 presented the digital work on the dream of artificial intelligence “Illusa fingo sogni fasulli” during the review “Con la testa tra le nuvole” in Bellinzona. At January 2021 presents “Am I human”, where he deeps the possibilities of dreaming of the Artifical Intelligence.

Academic career

After a PhD in Engineering Sciences and Technologies in Brussels, Gambardella began his academic career as a university lecturer: first Visiting Senior Scientist at the renowned Berkeley, in the United States, and then settling in Switzerland, where he held the role of University Professor at the SUPSI and USI. He directed the Master in Intelligent System (USI), the Master MSE Research Unit in Intelligent Systems (SUPSI), since 2016 he still directs the Master in Artificial Intelligence (USI). Gambardella is currently Vice Rector for Innovation and Corporate Relations at the University of Italian Switzerland (USI), and his scientific path includes more than 300 publications, 55’000 citations, h-index = 73.

Artificially

Luca Maria Gambardella is Co-founder and technical director of Artificialy, a company based in Lugano specialized in Artificial Intelligence. Its team of experts makes Artificial Intelligence something incredibly real and within everyone’s reach: “we don’t make robots that fall in love, have superpowers and conquer the world. Our challenge is to create highly technological solutions that are not only reliable, but above all understandable, sustainable and on a human scale”.

Novels

Author of two novels
– “Six Lives” (Zerounoundici, 2013)
It is the story of adolescents who chase life, of adolescents who become adults, of adults who find themselves helpless. Six lives, so imperfect on their own, so perfect in their movement in a single path, as underground streams in constant search of the river on the surface. A story that is born with an unforgettable holiday, swells rapidly with a tragic prophecy, suddenly abyss itself with an unanswered mystery.

– “The sound of dawn” (La Feluca, 2019).
An existential analysis: an intimate investigation into the instincts of the human being that is a moment of reflection to understand each other and perhaps better understand the mysterious and variegated universe that surrounds the author-protagonist. A story of an intensely lived life, that of Max, from his first sexual experiences to the exploration of himself and of individuals, to the discovery of love and every other emotion worth living.
